Local decentralized heat recovery units with ceramic heat exchangers – do they work?

Local heat recovery units for a single room – how to save on heating costs without costly construction work?

Decentralized or local heat recovery units are a cheaper alternative to central heat recovery units. That is why we call this segment local. Small ventilation units with heat recovery are suitable for new buildings or renovations as a replacement for existing negative pressure ventilation fans. A local decentralized unit is installed in one room in the wall. This saves you the cost of installing air ducts and construction work. A small heat recovery unit only requires a single opening in the wall into which it is mounted.

Thanks to alternating operation and the accumulation of energy from exhaust air in the ceramic exchanger body, there is no excessive heat loss caused by the supply of fresh cold air. The units thus ensure a regular supply of fresh air without dust or allergens and, above all, a reduction in humidity.

How do local heat recovery units actually work?

In automatic operating mode, decentralized heat recovery switches between supplying and extracting air from or to the room every 70 seconds. The fan speed is automatically adjusted by humidity and light intensity sensors (reduced operation at night), which ensures optimal air quality in the room.

In the Active and Wireless versions of local heat recovery, heat recovery efficiency reaches up to 90%, and the efficiency of the ceramic heat exchanger is up to 93%.

Heat recovery units in a family home, but also in an apartment without HVAC distribution

In places where it is not possible to install a central heat recovery unit, small local heat recovery units can be used to great advantage. This is especially true for apartments. In such cases, we recommend using and installing a local decentralized heat recovery unit. If the apartment is larger, it is possible to install multiple units in each room - living room, bedroom, kitchen.

Heat recovery units in one room can then be interconnected, up to 16 units. The Ghost Active versions are connected via a data cable, while the Ghost Wireless units are connected wirelessly (the unit creates its own hotspot). Once connected, the units operate on a master-slave principle. A single controller controls the master unit, which controls the slave units "below" it.

The quietest decentralized/local heat recovery units on the market!

  • Units with an average diameter of 160 mm have a noise level of only 4 dB(A) in night mode.
  • Units with an average diameter of 200 mm have a noise level of only 6.5 dB(A) in night mode.

Pros and cons of local units compared to central heat recovery

The big advantage of local ventilation units compared to central ones is their lower purchase price and the possibility of installing the unit directly into the wall. This eliminates the need to worry about where to place the HVAC ducts, and the units can also be used in existing buildings without the need for major construction work.

Advantages

  • lower purchase price
  • no air ducts
  • simple installation

Disadvantages

  • lower air exchange performance
  • more frequent unit maintenance required

Do you have a wide choice of which unit to choose?

Our range includes the best local heat recovery units from proven and reputable manufacturers. For example, the Respiro series from Soler&Palau in Spain, or the best-selling O.erre Ghost and O.erre ICON units.
