Duct insulation: which is best?

THERMAL_HVAC-R

Well-insulated ventilation ducts are a great way to save on heating costs. Insulating ducts reduces noise, increases thermal comfort in heated rooms, and can extend the life of the ductwork. What materials are best suited for insulating ducts? We will introduce you to the two most common alternatives for duct thermal insulation.

1. Mineral wool

Mineral wool insulation on ventilation ducts provides thermal, fire, and acoustic insulation and can also be used to prevent condensation in areas where the ducts pass through colder rooms. During the year, there may be periods when there is a risk of condensation on the outer surface (for example, in fresh air supply ducts leading through a heated room). In such cases, it is up to the designer to consider whether to use mineral wool insulation.

Mineral glass wool thermal insulation is most often supplied in the form of boards (suitable for square air ducts) or mats (suitable for circular ducts). These thermal insulations can be equipped with an ALU layer.

2. Rubber insulation

Synthetic rubber has a wide range of applications in duct insulation - cooling, ventilation, heating or water distribution, solar system insulation, residential caravan insulation, etc. Synthetic rubber is a flexible material with excellent technical properties that can prevent condensation from forming in ducts.

K-Flex Kraft self-adhesive rubber insulation is based on synthetic rubber and is suitable for thermal insulation of ventilation ducts. The advantage of rubber insulation over mineral wool is that a thinner layer of insulation can be used and it can be applied to ventilation ducts before installation.

One of the best-selling thermal insulation products is K-FLEX Kraft insulation with an aluminum layer, which can be easily and quickly attached using its self-adhesive surface. This excellent insulation has the same insulating properties as glass mineral wool insulation, but is thinner, which makes it easier to install and saves space.

Big trend: Insulating residential vans with K-Flex Kraft insulation

Recently, there has been a huge trend in traveling by residential van or caravan, and with it, building your own motorhome or van. Do you enjoy year-round trips with your van, where you can sleep soundly all year round? After all, a sleeping bag rated to -20 °C is a great help, but wouldn't you appreciate a few extra degrees at night?

Below, we will list a few tips on how to insulate your van or caravan. Insulation is really necessary these days. Van insulation is not only useful in winter, but also works very well in summer on hot days. Insulating your van works both ways. In winter, it keeps the heat in, but in summer, it helps prevent your caravan from becoming an unbearable oven. K-Flex Kraft thermal insulation is therefore multipurpose.

K-Flex Kraft rubber insulation is a very popular material for thermal insulation, and its installation and handling is very simple and clean. K-Flex Kraft insulation is soft, so you can shape it as needed (taking into account the thickness of the insulation) or simply cut it to the desired size.

K-Flex Kraft thermal insulation is based on synthetic rubber with a closed cell structure. Humidity does not soak into the insulation, which reduces corrosion of your car. The outside temperature does not pass from cell to cell, so you do not need to apply such a thick layer of insulation. Did you know that K-Flex Kraft insulation also acts as sound insulation?

What are the advantages of K-Flex Kraft for insulating motorhomes compared to cotton wool, wool, etc.?

  • Minimal absorbency
  • Thanks to the high-quality self-adhesive layer, installation does not require any additional materials (adhesives, pins, etc.)
  • Advantage of being able to use thinner insulation thanks to the closed cell structure and better thermal insulation properties
  • No fiber dust

What are the advantages of K-Flex Kraft for insulation compared to EPS, XPS, and other board materials?

  • K-Flex Kraft insulation is soft, easy to handle, easy to shape, and clean to work with
  • Adheres perfectly to the car body
  • Minimal water absorption

What thickness of K-Flex Kraft thermal insulation should I choose?

For thermal insulation of a motorhome, we recommend choosing insulation with a thickness of at least 15 mm or more. The insulation can be layered on top of each other if necessary. For example, it is possible to use a thinner layer of Kraft insulation to level out profiled areas (floor, ceiling) and then cover it with a thicker layer.

We have compiled a few tips for insulating motorhomes with K-Flex Kraft insulation:

  • Carefully clean and degrease the motorhome body before gluing, degreasing with technical alcohol or K-Flex Cleaner. Do not use technical gasoline for final degreasing of the body.
  • Do not apply K-Flex Kraft insulation to a hot body; the ideal application temperature is 15 °C to 25 °C, without direct sunlight and preferably indoors – in a workshop, garage, etc.
  • Cut K-Flex Kraft insulation with a carpet/utility knife.
  • Insulating the roof of a van is the most important thing – the sun beats down on the roof of the vehicle all day long, and in winter, most of the heat escapes through the roof. The sides of the vehicle are second in importance. We recommend using a thicker layer of K-Flex Kraft insulation to insulate the roof of a motorhome.
  • If you are considering insulating the floor of your vehicle, keep in mind that insulation is a soft material, so it is a good idea to create a plywood grid for the floor and insert K-Flex Kraft insulation between the boards.
  • Use K-Flex K-414 adhesive – in summer, the temperature of the roof can exceed the recommended temperature limits for insulation, which can cause the insulation to peel off. You can prevent this by using K-Flex K-414 adhesive, which has a temperature resistance of over 100 °C.

K-Flex ST Strip

K-Flex ST insulation tape is the most commonly used insulation material suitable for civil and industrial applications that require the use of insulation material, especially for insulating larger diameter air ducts, fittings, storage tanks and cooling tanks, water distribution systems, heating systems, as well as air conditioning and ventilation ducts.

Description of K-Flex ST Tape

K-Flex ST rubber insulation tape is black, non-absorbent, and permanently elastic insulation. Unlike fibrous materials such as mineral wool or polyester fiber insulation, it retains its perfect vapor barrier and insulation properties throughout its entire service life. Thanks to these properties, it is particularly suitable for thermal insulation of cold distribution systems. In addition, ST tape is also ideal for other applications such as thermal insulation of boilers, heat exchangers, storage tanks, or water and heating pipes to maintain the optimum required medium temperature in the range from -40°C to +85°C.

In special applications, the tape can also be used for temperatures down to -198°C, but this requires technical evaluation and an individual installation design.
