Door/gate air curtain: what is it used for?

An air curtain or air door is a ventilation device that separates environments with different temperatures with an air barrier (directed air flow) when the door is open. Most often, it separates the interior of a building from the outside environment. Air curtains create a strong air wall and thus prevent the exchange of warm air inside the interior and cold air from outside.

We supply air doors without heating, with electric heating, or with water heating

The air barrier is formed by a directed air flow that creates an air cylinder, which exits the device on one side and is sucked in on the opposite side. A typical use of an air curtain is to separate a heated interior space from the cold outside environment at the entrance to commercial or industrial buildings. Examples include department stores, restaurants, shopping arcades, production halls, and passenger areas at train stations and airports.

Another essential advantage is that it prevents the ingress of unwanted dust, smoke, odors, and insects.

Depending on the design, we divide air curtains into commercial and industrial

Our range includes a large selection of air curtains from various renowned manufacturers. The main requirements are the dimensions of the door or gate (the air flow should be wider than the entrance opening) and the type of curtain (without heating, water-heated, or electrically heated). Additional accessories can be purchased for air curtains, such as door contacts or thermostats. The door contact ensures that the curtain switches to maximum speed when the door/gate is opened.

How do air curtains work?

The air curtains generate a stream of air at the entrance area and act as an invisible curtain that can effectively shield the air in the room from the outside air. This not only reduces heating or cooling costs, but also increases comfort for people in the room (customers, employees, etc.).

The most commonly used types of air curtains are those with rotating blades or Venturi nozzles. In most cases, the air flow is directed perpendicular to the floor. Horizontal air flow is also used, of course, but it is not as common. Vertical installation of door curtains is used, for example, in roller door mechanisms, where it is not possible to place the curtain above the door.

Energy savings

In many cases, air curtains are used where heated spaces need to be protected from the ingress of cold air. Compared to open spaces, the use of air door curtains can save up to 80% of heating energy.

Similarly, on hot summer days, an air curtain can protect cooled spaces from the hot outside air. Air curtains are also used for this purpose in cold stores and freezer rooms. With energy prices constantly rising, the cost of purchasing an air curtain will quickly pay for itself in energy savings.

Proper installation, correct design, and high-quality professional assembly are essential for the proper functioning of air curtains for doors and gates. Properly designed and installed ventilation equipment prevents unwanted cold air from entering in winter and warm air from entering air-conditioned spaces in summer. The door curtains thus help to reduce electricity consumption costs and contribute to increased comfort inside the building.
